greetings & salutations internets… sorry it’s been so long. time has been flying by and it’s already been a year since my last blog post! i turned 35 in the summer of 2018 and for the first time started living sans-roommate, a natural progression at my age which has me shelling out double the rent i’m used to paying here in Boston, which has already been becoming progressively more of an expensive city over the 18 years i’ve resided here. but i’ve been keeping a 2-bedroom apartment all to myself because my record collection is massive and i also need the extra space for storing and creating my art so i’ve been working 6-day weeks to attempt to afford it, which leaves me very little downtime where i’m in the mood to do that ‘extra’ stuff like maintain a website. making art and my vinyl-to-cassette mixtapes are my passions essential to my existence and/or sanity, so i still make time for both whenever possible but making blog posts, pursuing art shows, getting back to writing and a lot of other endeavors i deeply desire to delve into have been put on the back burner. it feels like i’m just treading water right now, working all the time to afford the extra space that i don’t end up having the time to utilize properly, a Sisyphean cycle on repeat.
i’m fortunate enough to work two cool part-time jobs with good people - 4 days a week selling CBD products and more at The Hempest on Newbury St. & 2 days a week at my friends’ newer record store in Somerville, Vinyl Index. however neither are financially lucrative jobs, not enough to pay my double rent plus with only one day off a week i don’t have enough time to progress my own stuff (art life, website, writing, social life, love life - all neglected). i’m at a crucial juncture in life where i need to get on a better path, not getting any younger yet feel like i’m still waiting for my life to start in some ways. all this to say that for where i’m at, time is everything. a younger me used to look at the concept of TIME in the abstract metaphysical - time is an illusion, a creation of the human mind to make sense of reality that is happening all at once on some quantum physics shit - but now its way too sacred with so little of it free for me to make progress in my own life after i’m clocked out of my day jobs. does actualization of anamnesis just take time or have i not dedicated enough time to the pursuit of it? aaaanyway while i wish I had more time for philosophical musings, I don’t right now… i’ve got to get to work.
but perhaps all is addressed abstractly in this new _ronitape i’m here to share with you, TIME TAPE TWO.
here’s the Soundcloud link to the mix, you can stream or download it for free right here and listen whilst you peep the post! as always, this newest 90-minute mixtape is made from all vinyl from my personal collecsch, recorded from my turntable onto a blank cassette tape and then once the mix is finished its digitized to the interwebs for you all to enjoy for free. there are currently almost 90, 90-minute long vinyl-to-cassette mixtapes right here in the _rontitapes section of this site - over 120 hours of music from me to you that you can download or stream right now! they’re my way to share and spread my influences & interests to you, which are also the soundtracks to the creation of my visual art; perhaps they’re also an attempt to balance the karmic guilt of the selfish nature of record collecting, its inherent impetus to buy more records for oneself. but its more than that; these tapes are also my way to subtly psychoanalyze myself, attempts to show anyone out there listening how i’ve been feeling & the waves i’ve been riding - in a sense, they’ve pretty much developed into a different extension or dimension of my art. most of my tapes are casually constructed, free-flowing mixed-genre experiments spanning various styles and generations of creation, though sometimes i like to switch it up and challenge myself to focus on theme-mixes. there are 2 posts here on my ongoing originals vs covers mixtape series, and i've recently started some new series that will keep going like two if by tape (connected pairings of tracks), more women (all female voices) and the turntable tapedeck timemachine (decade specific). plus there’s the vinyl_in_decks sub-series i started once working at the Vinyl Index record store (first mix was all copped from and/or available at the shop, but i keep using the hashtag on all subsequent _ronitapes since plenty of the selections continue to come from there). always interested in suggestions so drop a comment if you want a certain theme explored! however this post is about the second foray into the Time Tapes series - here’s the link to the first edition if you missed it. for this series, since there are so many multitudes of great songs about the universally relevent subject of time, while giving records a spin if there’s a great track on said topic i’ll add it to a notepad list i keep active on my phone until i have at least a mixtape’s worth of tracks. then whence in the proper mewd i drop everything and channel the mix, pulling from the list of potential tracks in my arsenal to use but having no preconceived order or notion of how it will all play out. i usually drop a new mix every other week or so, but this mix came out extra nice in my humble and biased opinion so i figured it was the perfect excuse to force myself into getting back into adding ‘content’ to this blog. hoping to rearrange my life and get on a better track where i have more time for posts like this, there are sooo many records (amongst other things) i want to share with yawl! just got to find that time… or moreso, make it.
i hope you dig the mix… here’s pics of the records used, all from my collecsch!
