Serengeti's DENNEHY: the Kenny Dennis Chronicles Part 1

Serengeti's beloved breakout art rap cult classic is finally out on vinyl 11 years after its initial release!

peace innernets! tragedy struck my group of friends recently & i've ghosted back a bit to regroup...

getting back into the swing of things now to rep the long-awaited, first ever vinyl pressing of one of my favorite albums, Dennehy!

i gravitate to the weirder side of things so it's no wonder that Chicago's SERENGETI is one of my all-time favorite hip hop emcees, though he exists in more musical realms than just the one. not for most boom-bap rap purists, 'Geti is an oddball stylistic chameleon with a zeal for experimentation and a hilarious wit, a king of the art rap/ 'alternative'/indie/underground sound. a massive fan of the man's work, i've got grips of his CDs, vinyl & tapes so we'll be revisiting him plenty on this blog later; he's dropped albums with Why's Yoni Wolf, formed a supergroup called Sisyfus with Sufjan Stevens & Son Lux, and has released records with anticon, Graveface, Joyful Noise, MF Grimm's Day By Day, DJ Crucial's F5 Records and now Fake Four Inc.! while Serengeti has a surplus of excellent LPs, he is most beloved for one in particular, 2006's Dennehy which emblazoned him in our hearts forever. 11 years later, Fake Four has given it the proper vinyl treatment its always deserved. on Dennehy, Serengeti took the storytelling aspect of hip hop to a whole new level, creating characters and enthusiastically embodying them down to the details on tracks like a method actor, especially in the case of the life of KENNY DENNIS, the star of the show. peep the classic title track as we proceed...

playing a character is nothing new to hip hop, it's part of the DNA of the culture; individuals become someone else when they don their emcee name and its inherent persona to varying degrees. Kool Keith is an especially notable pioneer in developing characters in his raps with his array of multiple personalities like Dr. Octagon, Dr. Doom, Matthew, Black Elvis, etc., or M.F. DOOM, from his Zev Love X transition into the Metal Faced Villain, or Madlib as the cartoon Quasimoto. however with Dennehy, Serengeti went deeper into that writing style than perhaps anyone before him in rap; the album is split between at least 3 personas, 2 of them flushed out creations of his imagination, Kenny Dennis & Derek, the other being the 'Serengeti' rapper dude voice. Kenny Dennis is basically one of those guys on that nineties Saturday Night Live* skit with George Wendt & Chris Farley playing overweight mustached Chicagoan beer swilling sports fans howling about "Da Bears" &"Da Bulls". Serengeti creates Kenny's entire universe on this record (flushing it out on later releases which we'll come back to in a later post); his wife Jueles smokes Kools, favorite actor= Dennehy, favorite drink= O'Douls, his car= new Dodge with a Fiero stashed in the garage, vacations: (Wis)'consin, chicken: Swansons. Brotwursts & Berenger flicks on Laserdisc for life. While Kenny is the most beloved 'Geti persona let us not also forget Derek, the snobby emo hipster on meth who listens to U.K. garage on his iPod whose tales are weaved into the revolving perspectives of the Kenny & 'Geti characters which gives the album a unique and varied flow that transcends it from novelty territory to a truly multifaceted listening experience. before we get into the new vinyl pressing, here are images of the 2006 CD on Bonafyde Recordings with design by Novem Studios & the 2015 cassette by Hope For The Tape Deck with art by Stephen Cort Smith (limited to 100, i have #66):

while Dennehy has long been one of my favorite albums, it had fallen by the wayside for me since i couldn't play it on vinyl or tape until the 2015 cassette release, since those are the only formats i listen to music on at my crib. the tape got me bumping it again, and i wasn't surprised at all that it hadn't become dated; its a timeless one for me that i doubt i'll ever tire of. however it still desperately needed a vinyl pressing, though as such a random cult-classic underground type release i never really had much hope of it happening. fortunately since doing the anticon releases & then working with Sufjan Stevens, Serengeti's stock went up with him getting seen in a bigger spotlight. plus emcees inspired by him like Open Mike Eagle gaining popularity probably peripherally helped too.

finally, the loyal cult of the 'Geti King was rewarded by Fake Four Inc. this month with the first-ever vinyl of Dennehy, cut on beaut cloudy transparent/ opaque black color-in-color 2LP gatefold with an unrelated/ unheard EP, Beautyman, included as bonus D-side, and bundles available with shirts, enamel pins & the limited Derek bonus cassette to boot! cover art by Andrew McAlpine. this release is extremely limited so don't sleep, peep the beautiful bundle:

cop yr Dennehy bundle or vinyl from Fake Four now while you still can! in my many years working in the underground hip hop niche i found that the music in general started lacking a healthy sense of humor some time ago; the keep-it-real and thugged out aesthetics that came after the culture's more playful beginnings had largely killed off that approach. what is out there for funny hip hop can much of the time be corny, a novelty or immature; personally i can't really fox with most music with a goofy aesthetic though i love to laugh; it can be hilarious as long as it's still good music that stands on its own. i love The Dead Milkmen but hate Weird Al Yankovich, if that elucidates my point better haha. i'm going to wrap it up here now since we'll revisit the genius of Serengeti many more times on aroniousarts. was gonna hit you guys with a bunch of my favorite quotes from the album, but its really best experienced by listening, on repeat, so do yrself a favor and visit, or revisit, this art rap weirdo masterwork. you could use a good laugh. i leave you with this absolutely awesome image, which is a pictographic representation of every word spit on the top-tier title track of the album... fucking incredible! image by Stunt Rocks; picture is of my t-shirt version copped at a show, but its (currently) available as a print from 'Geti here.

proud to present you with my newest _ronitape mixtape cassette, Singer Or The Song?, a collection of original songs pitted against subsequent cover versions; all vinyl from the a_ronious collection! while i'm typically dropping at least one of these mixes on my Soundcloud page weekly, this one is special so it gets its own blog post. my style for these mixes is usually what i refer to as the skitzomix - i have a blank cassette in my tapedeck, and as i listen to LPs through, i record a track i'm especially feeling or think will fit the mix after the album has played through. so they're basically some kind of documentation of the music i've been listening to, buying or pulling back out of my crates and am most likely making my art to. once in a while i like to make a more focused mix, however, which brings us to my newest series, Originals vs. Covers. for many months i've been slowly compiling a list of originals vs. covers which i own on vinyl; i was finally ready to begin the series so yesterday i made the actual mix in one session; though i had a pre-selected list of tracks to pool from, like usual i freestyled the actual mix rather than thinking out the order in a premeditated way. pictured below are all of the records used to make the A-side of the mix:

the title of the mix comes from an Afghan Whigs song in which Greg Dulli declared "it's the singer, not the song" - while that track isn't on here since it's not a cover, i thought it was a prime embodiment of the thoughts the mix is meant to provoke - what makes a song great, the singer or the song? the lyrics or the performance? the thought or the attitude, intention or execution? a rhetorical question of course but an eternal musing for any artist or appreciator of their work! since the mix is a collection of pairings, i made images of the originals & their coupled covers, check 'em out:

Track 2: Damaged II. Black Flag vs. Pussy Galore    this gem is another inspiration for the series; the cover is from a Sub Pop fanclub 7" which features TAD doing Damaged I on the A-Side & Pussy Galore on Damaged II for the B. volume 2 of this mixtape series will include the Tad side but i had plenty of material for vol.1 without having to use any of the same records twice. i grew up on Rollins & Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion, Boss Hog & PG) so we'll surely revisit them both plenty on aroniousarts.com

Ladies Who Lunch was a 1-off project by Kate Schellenbach (Luscious Jackson! & original drummer for the Beastie Boys!) & Josephine Whigs (The Breeders!)   who just dropped 1 7" on Grand Royal called 'Kims We Love' - i'll get the B-side on vol. 2 of the series!

Ladies Who Lunch was a 1-off project by Kate Schellenbach (Luscious Jackson! & original drummer for the Beastie Boys!) & Josephine Whigs (The Breeders!) who just dropped 1 7" on Grand Royal called 'Kims We Love' - i'll get the B-side on vol. 2 of the series!

Track 4. How I Could Just Kill A Man. Cypress Hill vs. Rage Against The Machine    RATM's covers album Renegades obviously came in handy for this project! vol. 2 will include different covers from that album. i grew up on Cypress & Rage, the first 3 Cypress & first 2 RATM albums are classic status forever for me. i wanted to keep a good mix of styles on this album but didn't have too many hip hop cover songs so this was clutch, i'll have to brainstorm more for the next edition. i'll never forget how seeing the RATM video for 'Freedom' on MTV forever changed me as a grade-schooler, headbanging to the self titled album in my attic; Cypress Hill was of course the soundtrack to my discovery of cannabis in jr. high school; haha its funny that i made this mix on 4.20 but the Cypress song isn't about blazing weed but instead domes.

Gorilla Biscuits were a seminal second wave hardcore band in the late eighties with Civ on vocals & Walter Schreifels on guitar. Walter went on to produce Civ's solo band's indelible debut album, Set Your Goals which featured this song, so it makes perfect sense he would go on to cover it on his masterpiece of a solo album, An Open Letter To The Scene, which is primarily acoustic. Wally is a favorite vocalist of mine - his many bands like Quicksand, Rival Schools and Vanishing Life will get their way onto this blog soon enough!

The Vaselines vs. Nirvana    i'm a Cobain Kid, grew up on Nirvana from a young age, Kurt was my first big influence or 'creative patron saint' as i call them. his death deeply effected me and his music always stayed with me. Incesticide was my favorite Nirvana album as a kid (& may still be, though In Utero & Unplugged are heavy competition); the Cobain artwork is a major influence on my aesthetic. 2 of the classic tracks on that album & one off of Unplugged were covers of The Vaselines, but i never got around to hearing their music until this year i'm sorry to say! better late than never, however - the anthology of their career Sub Pop dropped on a 3LP, Enter The Vaselines is excellence & features multiple versions of the tracks Nirvana went on to cover after they played a show with the Vaselines which struck Kurt deeply enough to make him such a fan. so yes indeed, vol. 2 will include another of these covers!

Gonjasufi vs. Anna Wise    while much of the material on this tape are older releases, which makes sense with its theme of covers, this pairing features the newest track on here, versions from 2016-17 respectively. also different from the other pairs because both versions are from Gonjasufi albums, his 2016 dark, anguished masterwork Callus & the more accessible companion album Mandela Effect which is remixes, reimaginations & rarities of the Callus material. Gonjasufi is at the top of my list for contemporary music makers, will be making an extensive post on him sooner than later; i know less on Anna Wise but she murdered this cover! she was in Sonnymoon & sung on Kendrick Lamar albums & more, i'll have to keep my ears open more for her after this stellar job. there will be another from Mandela Effect for vol. 2  ...

Gonjasufi is at the top of my list for contemporary music makers, will be making an extensive post on him sooner than later; i know less on Anna Wise but she murdered this cover! she was in Sonnymoon & sung on Kendrick Lamar albums & more, i'll have to keep my ears open more for her after this stellar job. there will be another from Mandela Effect for vol. 2...

Minor Threat vs. The White Mandingos    the conclusion of Side A is also one of the most entertaining of the OG/cover duos that has me literally laughing out loud everytime. 19-yr young Ian MacKaye is blistering with that old hardcore angst on this cut which still stands up lyrically but via its content attracted racist idiots who misinterpreted it. the title is pretty much a red flag in today's PC age, so there is so much beautiful symmetry, humor & irony in The White Mandingos covering it, in fact it's probably the best duo on here in that respect. The White Mandingos all happened to be Black - a one-off album made up of MacKaye/Minor Threat compatriot, Bad Brains' Daryl Jennifer, Living Legends emcee Murs and journalist/renaissance man Sacha Jenkins, so them covering this song is just absolutely perfect to me.  on to side B!

D'angelo vs. Hanni El Khatib    i very recently did an extensive post on Hanni El Khatib on this very same blog you're reading, so check that out if you haven't! all praises to R&B/soul/blues/funk gawd D'angelo. i grew up on punk & hip hop and never had much love for R&B back then, in the rap era i came up in a major cliche was to talk shit on anything with R&B hooks, though then half the emcees saying that would of course go ahead & eventually do exactly what they had been dissing previously. so anyway, i was late to that game. as i got older & flushed out my musical tastes some more i found i fucked with this cat's music heavy. i segued into some neo-soul like this through rocking Dilla & Soulquarians. HEK is a master of covers (so yup you guessed it... more on vol. 2), he kills his version of the classic originally from Voodoo & co-produced by DJ Premier of Gang Starr. plus it was pressed on that delicious pie picture disc for RSD2015

Nick Waterhouse vs. Allah-Lahs    like the Gonjasufi duo, this pairing is more linked to one another than most of the other cuts. old-school style rhythm & blues/ soul sensation Nick Waterhouse featured his version, co-written with Pedrum Siadatian of Allah-Lahs, on his 2012 debut LP Time's All Gone on Innovative Leisure. later that year, Allah-Lahs featured their own version on their dreamy, surfy self-titled IL debut, and this nifty 8" single record in IL's Innov8 series also featured both versions back to back. i have that awesome Allah-Lahs LP also, but wanted to use the 8" to record one of the versions for this mix.

Track 11. Give Him A Great Big Kiss. The Shangri-Las vs. New York Dolls     " When I say I'm in love, you best believe I'm love L-U-V!". can't go wrong with this pair, another of the most fun combinations on this mix. proto-punk pioneering rock'n'rollers the New York Dolls were partially inspired by the sixties' girl groups, best evidenced on this cover done live in France in 1974 (and that influence was also prevalent on the surprisingly dope reunion album with surviving members in 2011, Dancing Backwards in High Heels). i absolutely LUV when David Johanson & Johnny Thunders recreate the original version's back-and-forth vocal banter, priceless. this Shangri-Las reissue is one of the only records i have of that sound/era, i look forward to exploring that more one day!

"When I say I'm in love, you best believe I'm love L-U-V!". can't go wrong with this pair, another of the most fun combinations on this mix. proto-punk pioneering rock'n'rollers the New York Dolls were partially inspired by the sixties' girl groups, best evidenced on this cover done live in France in 1974 (and that influence was also prevalent on the surprisingly dope reunion album with surviving members in 2011, Dancing Backwards in High Heels). i absolutely LUV when David Johanson & Johnny Thunders recreate the original version's back-and-forth vocal banter, priceless. this Shangri-Las reissue is one of the only records i have of that sound/era, i look forward to exploring that more one day!

The Cure vs. Tricky    it's funny how when you're younger you rebel against your parents' music even if it's dope but can come to deeply appreciate it later, which is what happened to me with The Cure. my folks were always playing plenty of 80s new wave gems but i reacted by getting only into music that was heavier or edgier, until my tastes developed or flushed out with age to the point that i now consider The Cure one of my favorite bands, especially their late 70s and mid 80s stuff - Boys Don't Cry, Head On The Door, Pillbox Tales and the comp this was taken from, Japanese Whispers, are among my preferred LPs of theirs. Adrian Thaws aka Tricky has been with me since i was a youngin', i either got into him through his debut on Massive Attack or right after i got into Portishead & what was then being called 'trip hop', a term Tricky abhors, much like the term Alternative was also total bs around then, though it stuck around longer. i consider him another one of my 'creative patron saints' most especially because of how his albums Pre Millenium Tension and Angels With Dirty Faces changed how i thought about music and art at a younger age, and i stay rocking his new material. he's always been a master at flipping covers quite uniquely in that way only he can, so i knew i would get one of his songs on this mix; i had actually never heard or come across this 2003 album Vulnerable until a week ago while digging at a local shop; it was a little expensive for a used LP but when i saw it had a Love Cats cover i knew i must buy it immediately. i had been compiling a list of tracks for this eventual mix on my phone, subconsciously mulling it about, but when i copped that Tricky, i knew i had to finally make this mix. and here you have it!

Track 12. The Love Cats. The Cure vs. Tricky

Adrian Thaws aka Tricky has been with me since i was a youngin', i either got into him through his debut on Massive Attack or right after i got into Portishead & what was then being called 'trip hop', a term Tricky abhors, much like the term Alternative was also total bs around then, though it stuck around longer. i consider him another one of my 'creative patron saints' most especially because of how his albums Pre Millenium Tension and Angels With Dirty Faces changed how i thought about music and art at a younger age, and i stay rocking his new material. he's always been a master at flipping covers quite uniquely in that way only he can, so i knew i would get one of his songs on this mix; i had actually never heard or come across this 2003 album Vulnerable until a week ago while digging at a local shop; it was a little expensive for a used LP but when i saw it had a Love Cats cover i knew i must buy it immediately. i had been compiling a list of tracks for this eventual mix on my phone, subconsciously mulling it about, but when i copped that Tricky, i knew i had to finally make this mix. and here you have it!

Track 13. Jump Around. House of Pain vs. Everlast    haha while throwing Jump Around on a mix is pretty much a jock-jam cliche at this point in time in most cases, it is fucking perfect for this mix, accompanied with lead emcee Everlast's deliciously subdued acoustic reimagining of it 20 years later which is oh so dope. if you misinterpret that statement as me talkin' shit on the H-O-P yr surely mistaken, but isn't it funny how gigantic that song is, sports-event-arena style, though it has the line "if your girl steps up, i'm smackin' the ho" on it? if yr misinterpreting  that  last statement as me endorsing men hitting women yr also dead wrong, but conversely, i will say i'm kinda glad that he kept that line alive on the acoustic version so many years later, because in a way isn't it kinda actually non-sexist? like, anyone who steps up gets slapped, gender nonwithstanding? haha just stoned musing here, you might perceive it differently... but Everlast was always pretty socially conscious on the mic & i count him as a positive male role model/ inspiration in my development as a young man back in the nineties, though i surely would love to hear others opinion on that one line which surely still stands out.

Crime vs. Sonic Youth    but i already put a Sonic Youth song on this tape! true, however it was them being covered, this time they're doing the covering; also there's almost a decade between the 2 songs, plus the other one features Kim on vocals but this one is a Thurston song! also, SY has a wealth of worthy & eligible covers for this mix series, so best believe we'll have more on vol. 2. Crime was a first wave punk band from San Francisco active from 1976-80 largely forgotten by history despite being pioneers of the punk sound in Northern California. their shit is so drrty scuzzy filthy, evidenced by this track and other classics like "Piss On Your Dog" or "Baby You're So Repulsive". they would perform (illegally) in full official police garb for their shows back then. i got hip to them when the pictured compilation came out (or maybe it was via a Punk45 compilation) & then backtracked to their other comp, San Francisco's Still Doomed which has some more fire on it. however, i had been rocking one of Crime's jams for years without realizing it, since Sonic Youth covered this track, Crime's most well known, on SY's 1987's Sister LP, the rest of which is largely an homage to another one of my biggest influences, author Philip K. Dick.

Minutemen vs. Stanford Prison Experiment    the symmetry couldn't have worked better and i swear i didn't plan it out! for the final track on vol. 1, we have a cover duo near and dear to me since its probably one of the first instances i became interested into areas like this at a young age in the mid nineties. though they're one of the most vital/best/important bands of 2nd wave punk? hardcore (how do you classify Minutemen, honestly, i have no idea) because of my age i came across them through the bands they influenced. it could've been Mike Watt's appearance on a Sublime VHS tape i had, but i'm pretty sure my first exposure to one of the greatest bands of all time, Minutemen, was through the little known post-hardcore band Stanford Prison Experiment covering "It's Expected I'm Gone" on their self titled 1994 debut. though they were down with Rage Against The Machine and Quicksand, i feel like no one i knew ever was aware of or into SPE, they were always just a private fave of mine. infinite respect to them for covering that track, leading me to Minutmen's masterpiece Double Nickels On The Dime. though i'm not trying to make any clear statement with this mix, that's basically what it's all about - the interconnected webs of inspiration, how we process our influences into what becomes our own unique arts. also the importance of repping what is important to you, publicly - i found the bulk of my favorite groups by reading the Thank-You sections of albums i already loved, or by their collaborations, or cover tracks of their influences - all of these things are vital to respecting where things came from and also paving a way for a brighter future by extending the life of great music and art which can thus continue to stimulate even more minds .
